Designing Cities of the World 2018: Barcelona
Designing the City Border

POLITECNICO DI MILANO
Exam Dates: 19 June 2018
02 July 2018
The project topic deals with the definition of Barcelona’s main border: the seafront. The coastal line, the former backyard of heavy industrial activity, is being reconverted into a multifunctional stripe where housing, innovative clean production (knowledge-intensive activities), leisure and sport activities meet together. The border, while incorporating the protected industrial heritage, has both to connect the town to the sea and to link the different segments of the town along the seashore. It becomes the business card of the city. More than 50% of the world population lives at the seacoast. And most of the bigger non-coastal cities have a riverfront. This is an educational opportunity to learn about the complexity of waterfronts.
